Bloodsongs, Issue 1
Published by Bambada Press, January, 1994
Edited by Chris A. Masters & Steve Proposch

Bloodsongs #1 caused quite a stir with the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC). Seems that someone lodged a complaint after she caught her teenage son reading a copy and thought its content to be inappropriate.-- the fact that she should be happy that her son was actually reading never occurred to her. Well the wise folks at the OFLC decided to give Bloodsongs #1 a slap on the wrist and assigned it a Category One rating, which meant it had naughty content, could no longer be sold to minors and had to be displayed in a plastic wrapper in case it bit somebody. This also meant that it was "banned" in the state of Queensland. By banned I mean that Category One publications are not allowed to be sold in QLD but can be mail-ordered from interstate. Don't ask me why. At the time the only other publications (that I know of) to have been slapped with the Category One rating were Brett Easton Ellis's novel, American Psycho and Madonna's Sex book.
The first we heard of this was when I got a phonecall at our office from a bookstore owner who told me that some woman -- I assume the same one who lodged the complaint with the OFLC -- came into his shop demanding that he remove Bloodsongs from his shelves because it had been banned. I had to call the OFLC to confirm this. Seems that if a complaint is lodged that they don't even have to inform the publisher. Gotta love the guys! NOT!
I was hoping that this would get media attention, thus boosting our sales and getting us some much needed free publicity, but unfortunately the media didn't seem to be interested. Despite this Bloodsongs #1 sold moderately well, not quite enough to cover our costs, but it did okay. Overall, Steve and I were very proud of our accomplishment and the first issue was well received amongst horror aficionados. |
